What a gutter cleaning visit includes
A cleaning visit has a short, fixed scope:
- Debris scooped out of every run, by hand, into a bucket or onto a drop cloth
- Each downspout outlet cleared and flushed with water
- Water confirmed at the base of every downspout
- Gutters rinsed so the bottom of the trough is visible
- Roof-edge check: drip edge, last course of shingles, fascia and gutter hangers
- Debris hauled away, not left on the lawn
- A note and photos of anything we found
The last two lines matter. A cleaning with no inspection is a chore. A cleaning with a roofer looking is an early warning.
Gutter cleaning near me: how a visit runs
Call, tell us roughly how many stories and how many runs, and we set a time. We bring ladders and a hose. On the day, one person works along the roofline while another handles the ground and the downspouts.
Customers report yards left neat, debris removed and quiet worksites when asked. We do not walk on a wet roof or work from a ladder in wind. If rain is coming, we reschedule rather than push it.
The visit step by step
- You call with the story count and number of runs, and a visit is set, often within a day.
- The roofer sets ladders and works the roofline run by run, bagging debris.
- Each downspout is flushed and the water is watched at the base.
- The roof edge is checked and anything found is photographed.
- Bags are hauled away and the walkways are left clean, with photos sent the same day.
- Any repair is quoted separately in writing first.

Downspout cleaning: the part people skip
Downspouts clog at the top, at the elbow, and at the base where an extension or underground drain begins. A clean gutter above a clogged downspout still overflows, so we flush every one with water and watch the exit. If water backs up, we work it from the bottom with a hose or small auger.
If the downspout drains into a buried pipe, we can confirm it leaves the downspout. Where it goes after that is outside the scope of a cleaning. If the pipe is blocked, tell us and we will point out where the problem sits.

Roof and gutter cleaning: what a roofer sees up there
The reason to have a roofer on the ladder is the roof edge. Once the gutter is empty, the edge shows:
- Rot or soft spots in the fascia behind the gutter
- Hangers that have pulled loose or rusted
- A drip edge that does not lap properly
- Shingle edges curling or lifting at the last course
- Flashing near a valley or chimney that has pulled away
On one Alameda job, flashing and gutter faults left by a previous contractor were fixed at the same visit. These show up easily when a roofer cleans, and they are missed by a crew that only sees the debris. For fascia rot, see our page on fascia and soffit repair.
Fall gutter cleaning and the Alameda calendar
BestPlaces puts Alameda's rain at about 22 inches a year, all but a little of it from October through April. The summer is dry, so debris builds up for months without being flushed away. Early fall, once most leaves have dropped and before the first heavy storm, is the best time.
A second look in late winter makes sense under heavy tree cover. If your roof is old, ask us to check the roof edge at the same visit. Our post on the gutter cleaning schedule for tree-lined streets goes further on timing.
Rental property gutter cleaning
Owners of several properties need the same thing at each address: gutters clear before the rains, a short report on what was seen, and the visit done quietly. One owner of several properties had five new roofs from us, and a customer had gutter work done on three rental homes.
Give us the addresses and who has access. We schedule runs in one pass and send photos afterward. Customers report same-day photos of finished work.
Clean gutters cost: what moves the price
We do not list a flat price, because these details change the work:
- Linear feet of gutter and number of downspouts
- Single story versus two story
- How much debris has built up
- Whether guards or screens have to be lifted off
- Access, such as a narrow side yard or steep grade
Only the written estimate fixes the price. If we find repairs while cleaning, they are quoted separately so the cleaning price stays what it was.

Rules that touch a cleaning visit
Debris and rinse water belong out of the street. The City of Alameda's Clean Water Program guidance says storm drains run to local creeks or the Bay without treatment and asks contractors to keep wash water, trash and debris out of them, so ask how any crew disposes of both. Repairs found on the way follow the usual rules: check the contractor at cslb.ca.gov, and the estimate should say who pulls any permit.

What gutter cleaning does not include
Cleaning does not fix a sagging gutter, replace rotten fascia, reseal a failing seam or install guards. It does not clean the roof surface of moss or algae, and it does not repair flashing. If any of those turn up, we tell you and price them separately. Our gutter installation page covers new runs for gutters past saving.
Gutter cleaning across the East Bay
We clean gutters in Alameda and cover Oakland, Berkeley, San Leandro and Hayward. The office sits at 1910 Webster St. Drive times change with bridge and tube traffic, so we confirm timing at booking.
