Heat is Clayton's roof problem
Clayton's July highs average about 90 degrees, per Wikipedia, and its yearly rain is about 20 inches. That is close to Alameda's rainfall, so the leak risk is similar. The wear is not. Sun dries out shingles, bakes sealant and loads the attic with heat.
We look at attic ventilation on every Clayton-area inspection. Attic venting repairs are one of the services on our Google listing, and a lighter shingle color is worth a quote if the attic runs hot. A lighter color is an option, not a requirement.

Foothill edges and the fire question
The town stands at the base of Mount Diablo, and the 2018 Marsh Creek Road fire shows what dry brush can do nearby. If your home falls in a hazard zone, Class A roofing and ember-resistant vents become part of the reroof. If it does not, the choice is yours, but the fire-rated option may still be worth pricing.
- Roof Repair
Summer sun bakes shingle granules off south slopes, so repairs often target worn flashing and exposed nail heads. We photograph granule loss and cracked sealant so you can weigh repair against replacement.
- Roof Replacement
A reroof is the moment to price fire-rated materials and ember-resistant vents for a foothill lot. Clayton's 20 inches of rain a year still call for sound underlayment and flashing, not only a fire rating.
- Skylights
Skylights add heat gain on hot afternoons, and old seals fail first on sun-facing curbs. Reseal before replacing if the glass is sound; on three Alameda skylights that fix worked.
- Emergency Roof Repair
Winter leaks can wait a few hours for a tarp, but arrival depends on crew availability that day. Photograph the ceiling stain and call early so we can plan around the day's schedule.
- Attic Venting Repair
Attic venting repairs are on our Google listing, and Clayton's July highs near 90 degrees make them relevant. A blocked or undersized vent set can cook the shingles from underneath.
- Cool Roofs
Whether Title 24 cool-roof rules apply depends on your climate zone and the city building department. A lighter shingle color can ease attic heat on a south slope, and we price it either way.
- Roof Inspection
Oakhurst roofs from the 1990s are now about 30 years old. An inspection checks granule loss, sealant at penetrations and the vents, so you know how much life the roof has left before you budget.

Oakhurst and the newer neighborhoods
Oakhurst Country Club was developed in the 1990s, so roofs from that era are around 30 years old unless an owner already replaced them. That age deserves a close look, and a repair or reseal can still be the honest answer. On one Alameda job we resealed flashing on three skylights instead of replacing them.
The Morgan Fire and the hazard map
The 2013 Morgan Fire on Mount Diablo burned 3,100 acres, per Wikipedia, and a CBS News report on State Fire Marshal maps lists Clayton among 12 Contra Costa cities with very high fire hazard severity areas. That does not make every Clayton address a hazard-zone address. Look yours up on the CAL FIRE map, then ask the city what a reroof requires there.
An 1857 townsite and the 1987 annexations
Joel Henry Clayton and his brothers laid out the town in 1857, and coal mining carried it through its early years, per Wikipedia. Annexations in 1987, including Dana Hills/Dana Ridge and Clayton Wood, more than doubled the city's land area. So Clayton has an old townsite, neighborhoods that joined in 1987 and the 1990s Oakhurst development, and roofs of very different ages. Ask when yours was last done. Two houses on one street can be one roof apart in age, and the inspection treats each roof by its own condition.
Getting a visit
The drive is about 51 minutes, and we do not set a response time. Alameda customers have reported next-day estimates, but Clayton is farther, so scheduling follows the crews. Call, describe the roof, and we will say what is realistic.
The City of Clayton handles permits, and the estimate states who pulls one; confirm it with the city. We also cover Concord, Walnut Creek and Pittsburg.
