Aging roofs in the hills
Woodside's redwoods were logged from the 1840s on, and the hills later filled with custom homes, some of them decades old. Some still wear wood shake or heavy, original shingle. Those roofs age by splitting, curling and growing moss in the shade. A repair is worth considering when the damage is local, but we tell you plainly when the whole surface is worn.

- Roof Repair
A repair on an old shake or shingle roof starts with whether the surrounding material can hold a patch. We test nearby shakes and tabs first and say in writing if the field has run out of life.
- Roof Replacement
Replacing shake means a full tear-off, and the new covering must meet the town's Class A minimum. The estimate lists the underlayment and vents beside the covering, since the rating covers the assembly.
- Skylights
Custom homes often carry several skylights, which are the first places to check for leaks. We reseal where the curb is sound and replace only where the frame or glass has failed.
- Emergency Roof Repair
Hill roads and distance mean urgent response depends on crews and traffic that day. Describe the road and driveway so the crew can judge access, and photograph the leak first.
- Gutters
Redwood needles, oak leaves and eucalyptus debris all end up in gutters here. Wikipedia places redwoods and Douglas fir in the western hills and oaks and eucalyptus lower down, so the debris differs by lot.
- Attic Venting Repair
Woodside's re-roof handout cites R337.6 for exterior vents, so vent choice is part of a reroof. Attic venting repairs are on our Google listing, and ember-resistant vents are priced as their own line.
- Roof Inspection
Large custom homes on wooded parcels hide problems under canopy. A photographed inspection, with aerial photos on big or steep roofs, shows each plane and penetration before you commit to a scope.
Class A and ember vents
The fire marshal for Woodside Fire Protection District said in 2014 that Woodside requires Class A roofing, and the town's re-roof handout repeats a Class A minimum. That rating covers the whole assembly, not just the top layer. The same handout cites R337.6 for exterior vents in the work area, so ask whether your eave and attic vents need to change.

Filoli, Skyline Boulevard and the redwood hills
Woodside's best-known property is Filoli, a 654-acre estate built from 1915 to 1917, per Wikipedia, and the town is full of large parcels in that tradition. Skyline Boulevard follows the ridge of the Santa Cruz Mountains above, and Wunderlich Park's trails run through the Folger Estate Stable Historic District. Parcels are large, so we ask about the road, the gate and the driveway on the first call. A historic or unusual house may be reviewed before a material change, so ask the town before you choose a covering.
Who approves what
Woodside is an incorporated town. Permits come from the town's building division, not San Mateo County. The estimate names who pulls the permit, and you should confirm it. If your house is historic or unusual, ask whether design review comes first.
Getting a roofer out to Woodside
The drive is about 49 minutes, and the climb into the hills can add more. We do not promise a response time. Alameda customers have reported next-day estimate scheduling, so planned inspections may be quick, but urgent visits depend on crews that day.
Wayne or Pedro often does the inspection, and you receive a written estimate with photos. Nearby, we also cover Portola Valley, Atherton and San Carlos.
