Which shingle problems can be repaired?
Most single-shingle problems can be repaired. Replacing the shingle and resealing the surrounding tabs fixes a loose, cracked or missing shingle with a clean, localized repair. These are the usual cases.
- Missing shingles: Wind or age took them. The underlayment is exposed and needs covering first.
- Loose shingles: The sealant strip has failed. Often they can be re-fastened and resealed.
- Cracked or curled shingles: One crack is a repair. Curling across a slope is age.
- Nail pops: A nail backing out pushes the shingle up and lets water in at the head.
- Granule loss: Bare patches in a few spots can be repaired. Bare patches everywhere cannot.
Alameda's wind comes in off the bay, and an older shingle with a tired sealant strip is the first thing it lifts.

Missing and loose shingle repair: what we actually do
Missing shingles repair starts with the nails. We lift the course above, pull the damaged shingle and its fasteners, check the underlayment for tears and the decking for soft spots, and then set a new shingle with nails in the proper line. The course above is resealed so the patch does not rattle loose in the next wind.
We do not smear roof cement over a cracked shingle and call it done. A cement patch is a stopgap that traps water and shortens the life of the shingles next to it. For loose shingle repair we re-fasten and reseal only when the shingle is flat and flexible. A shingle that cracks when lifted is replaced.

Ridge shingle repair and why ridges go first
Ridge caps take the most wind and sun on the roof. They are cut shingles bent over the peak, and when the nails pull or the sealant lets go, the ridge opens along the top of the house where water enters the attic.
After one Alameda windstorm, lost ridge shingles were tarped the same day. Permanent ridge repair replaces the cap shingles, checks the ridge vent if there is one, and re-nails along the full run. A ridge failure often points to more than one weak spot, so we look at the rest of the line.
Ridge vent work belongs on the attic venting repair page.

Can discontinued shingles be matched?
Sometimes. Manufacturers retire colors and profiles every few years, and an Alameda roof installed decades ago may have no exact match. We take a sample from a hidden spot, compare it against current lines, and bring samples to the house before we commit.
Where an exact match is not possible, we put the new shingles on the least visible slope or choose the closest color, and we tell you how it will look. One Alameda partial repair began only after matching material was tracked down and delivered. If a match is impossible and the roof is old, replacing a whole slope can look better than a patch, and we say so.
Wood shake repair in Alameda
Wood shake repair is more limited than composition. A cedar shake that has split can be replaced, but weathered shakes become brittle and break when neighbors are lifted. A roof of gray, cupped shakes is usually a replacement candidate.
We inspect first and photograph the condition. If only a few shakes have failed and the rest are sound, a repair is reasonable. If the roof is brittle and mossy, we say a patch will cost more than it saves.
How many shingles are too many to patch?
The count does not decide it. The pattern does. Four missing shingles after a windstorm on a roof otherwise in good shape is a repair. Four missing shingles scattered over a roof with bare mat showing in every course is a reroof in progress.
Look for these signs that repair is no longer the right answer:
- Leaks appearing in new locations after each repair
- Shingles breaking when lifted instead of bending
- Granules collecting in gutters and at the downspouts
- Two layers of covering already in place. The California Building Code does not allow a new covering over a roof that already has two applications, so that roof needs a tear-off.
Tile roofs follow different repair rules, which the tile roof repair page covers.
Shingle repair visit, step by step
- Photos and description. You tell us what you saw. If you have photos from the yard, send them.
- Roof inspection. We check the damaged area and the surrounding courses and the flashing.
- Written estimate. It lists the shingles, the number of courses and who pulls any permit. Confirm the permit before you sign.
- Material check. Shingles are matched or ordered before the day of work.
- Repair. Damaged shingles come out, the underlayment is patched and new shingles are set and sealed.
- Cleanup. Nails are swept with a magnet and the yard is left neat.
- Finished photos. They are sent to you the same day.

What does roof shingle replacement cost in Alameda?
A shingle repair costs less than replacing the roof, and its price depends on how many courses are involved, roof pitch, access and whether decking has to be repaired. A small repair on a single-story roof is a different job from a repair at the peak of a steep three-story house.
For comparison, Homeyou's 2026 estimate for a 1,282 square foot composition shingle roof is $6,248 to $8,056, and Build-folio's 2026 Oakland benchmark for a 2,286 square foot composition roof is $18,377 to $24,864. A repair is far below those figures. One Alameda customer reported a patch repair around $2,000, which is one customer's number. Hold the final figure to your written estimate.
Permits and licensing for shingle repairs
A few replaced shingles sit far below the roughly 200 sq ft where a third-party county guide says roof permits generally begin (PermitFlow), though a full slope can cross it. Ask the City of Alameda Permit Center, and have the estimate say who pulls any permit. Roofing work calls for a C-39 classification from the CSLB, and the $1,000 minor-work exemption requires no permit and no employees (§7048).
