Quarter-acre lots and the trees that come with them
The minimum lot for most Los Altos homes is a quarter acre (Wikipedia, Los Altos), and older yards hold large mature trees. Trees mean shade, and shade means moss, damp decking and clogged valleys. We clear a valley, look under it and report what we find.
Most of the city was built out between 1950 and 1980 (Wikipedia, Los Altos), and 79.1% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. That makes a typical house here 45 to 75 years old, and an older house may have been reroofed more than once. We count layers at the edge before anything else, because two layers already on means a full tear-off. Streets are mostly broad dirt shoulders with no sidewalks outside the commercial zones and arterials, so we map where the dumpster, ladder and delivery truck sit before the crew arrives.

An overhanging limb is also a storm risk. If one lands on the roof, photograph it before moving it and call; we document damage for your insurer and meet the adjuster on site.
Shake roofs and fire class
Older Los Altos homes may still have wood shakes. The state's Wildland-Urban Interface Code requires Class A roof assemblies in Fire Hazard Severity Zones, and a Los Altos fire-district presentation says only a small portion of the city's neighborhoods are mapped High or Moderate. Whether your parcel is one, and what the city requires, are questions for the CAL FIRE map and the building division. Fire class comes from the whole assembly, not the shake alone, so ask what the manufacturer and the city accept.

The downtown triangle, Redwood Grove and three creeks
Downtown Los Altos is a triangle bordered by arterial streets that let most through traffic bypass Main Street, and the civic center sits in the middle of an orchard remnant (Wikipedia, Los Altos). Redwood Grove, a 5.9-acre nature preserve off University Avenue, joins Shoup Park by a creekside path. Adobe Creek runs through the grove and usually dries up by summer; Permanente Creek and Stevens Creek flow north across the city as well.
The Los Altos train station, a craftsman-style building from 1913, stands at 288 First Street, and the Halsey House, a Spanish Revival home from the late 1920s, is a local landmark. The city sits near the San Andreas Fault, and the 1906 earthquake reached intensity VIII here. After a strong quake we look at chimneys and flashing, since a cracked joint can leak long before a stain shows.
Zone 4 reroof rules
Los Altos sits in Climate Zone 4. A reroof of over half the roof needs a rated cool product, and exceptions exist, so confirm with the city before you pick a color.
Roof services for Los Altos homes
- Roof Repair
Shade from mature trees keeps shingles damp, so repairs begin with moss, rot at the eaves and soft decking. On 1950s to 1970s houses, we also check old patches left by earlier owners before touching new material.
- Roof Replacement
Replacing an older wood roof means picking a fire-rated assembly and meeting Zone 4 cool-roof rules. The estimate names the assembly, the underlayment and the cool-rated product, so the city can check them.
- Gutters
Big lots with big trees drop heavy leaf and needle loads into gutters. Water drains onto large yards, so downspouts should carry runoff well clear of the foundation, not just off the eave.
- Skylights
Ranch homes with vaulted ceilings often have skylights whose flashing needs resealing. Shade keeps the flashing damp and the sealant softens, so we trace the leak to the curb and reseal before we recommend replacement.
- Emergency Roof Repair
A fallen limb or sudden leak gets phone triage and a tarp plan; arrival depends on crew availability. Photograph the limb in place first so you can show your insurer how it landed.
- Roof Inspection
An inspection before a shake-to-composition decision records the deck, the fire class of what is on the roof now, and the shaded slopes, so you can compare quotes on the same facts.
- Flat Roofing
Joseph Eichler built homes on Clay Drive, and Eichler-era homes have flat or low-slope roofs where a membrane or built-up system, not shingles, is the right material and drainage matters most.
- Roof Maintenance
Oaks and redwoods overhead mean moss, needles and clogged valleys. A scheduled clean-out and flashing check before October keeps trapped moisture off the decking and slows the need for a reroof.
Visits from Webster St
Call the Alameda office, describe the roof, and we book an inspection. The applicant for the permit is listed in the estimate. The drive is long, so we cannot promise a quick arrival for a leak.
